Abstract: The Colorado Water Plan sets an ambitious goal of sharing 50,000 acre-feet of water through voluntary alternative water transfer methods (ATMs) by 2030 in order to avoid significant, long-term impacts to rural communities and food security while meeting growing water demands. This session will provide recent updates on progress made towards this goal and how ATMs are being utilized to address emerging challenges including maintaining interstate compact compliance, achieving groundwater sustainability, and enhancing environmental flows for wildlife. The session will also tackle remaining barriers to the adoption of more flexible water marketing tools in Colorado and remaining research gaps to be explored.
