The Colorado Water Center is hosting a monthly lightning talk series in the 2025 Spring semester featuring talks by CSU faculty and staff involved in water-related research, education, and extension to promote sharing & collaboration across departments and disciplines.

Session 2: Water Quality Research and Engagement

This lightning talk session will focus on water quality research and extension efforts going on at CSU. Debbie Lee will discuss her ongoing research on private well water quality in Colorado and private well stewardship. Derek Lowstuter will focus on the use of biochar to reduce agricultural fertilizer leaching or runoff to increase water use efficiency and water quality. Guinevere Nelson will discuss Colorado’s mining legacy, water quality, and watershed groups. Erik Wardle will focus on working with the agricultural community to protect waters of the state for agricultural chemicals, highlighting the importance of relationships and partnerships to achieve mutually beneficial goals.

This lightning talk session focuses on various aspects of water governance, policy, and impacts of environmental change. Dr. Tamee Albrecht presented her research on water policy and governance, highlighting current projects on urban water utilities, post-fire watershed restoration effectiveness and social impacts, and collaborative governance of international wetlands. Dr. Steven Conrad presented on the importance of human dimensions in water management and modeling. Dr. Frances Davenport presented her research on climate change and the associated changes in extreme weather events and water resource availability, highlighting her current work to understand changes and future projections of extreme precipitation and flooding. Dr. Jacob Petersen-Perlman presented his research on how political organizations adapt to environmental change in their water resources, with a focus on Western groundwater governance and management.
