August 20, 2020 - August 21, 2020

Water Educator Symposium

Equipping Learners for Action in a Climate of Uncertainty

August 20, 2020
9:00am-5:00pm

Water educators consistently face questions from learners about Colorado’s water future and regularly need to put their educational activities in context despite underlying uncertainties. An issue such as climate change can increase the anxiety of all learners, but particularly children as highlighted in reports from the American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the Washington Post, and Colorado’s own KRCC.

The Statewide Water Education Action Plan for Colorado (SWEAP) describes an impact, that by 2025, Coloradans are “Empowered to take thoughtful action regarding critical water challenges facing the state and their communities.” If we are educating in part for action, how can we better understand the relationship between uncertainty, anxiety, and action? What responsibility do we have as educators for addressing the socio-emotional needs of our learners? How do we create a welcoming environment for civic participation in our decision-making bodies? What tools exist inside the field of education to tackle this?

Please join us in Keystone for a robust discussion of these challenging issues as well as examples of educators who are tackling the issues head on. View the draft agenda here.

Project WET Educator Workshop

Activities for Hydrology, Climate & Colorado’s Water Future

August 21, 2020
8:00am-3:00pm

Join us for this exciting workshop and become certified as a Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) Educator!

This Project WET Educator Workshop will offer extensions to classic Project WET activities and newly-designed lesson plans to incorporate local context/hydrology, as well as scenarios for climate and Colorado’s water future. Keystone is an excellent context for this discussion as a headwaters location working to balance a world-class recreation economy with the impact of transbasin diversions and critical infrastructure including the I-70/Loveland Pass corridor and Dillon Reservoir.

Designed to challenge students and introduce new science, social studies, English, and math concepts, Project WET‘s Guide 2.0 is the perfect curriculum and activity guide for any educator. In the workshop, the facilitator will model up to six activities and participants will plan and teach a lesson to peers and receive feedback from workshop facilitators. Upon completion of this workshop, you will be certified as a Project WET Educator and will leave equipped to lead engaging, hands-on learning activities in your own learning spaces using Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide 2.0 (Guide 2.0 costs $27).
