Chemical Toxicants in Water: A GeoHealth Perspective in the Context of Climate Change

June 14, 2021 @ 9:00 am - June 16, 2021 @ 12:00 pm

Hosted by Northern Arizona University Center for Health Equity Research

GeoHealth is the study of the geographic distribution of adverse health outcomes. Water, of course, plays a pivotal role in GeoHealth, for we are all intimately connected into the water cycle, and it, in turn, impacts our health and well-being.

The Idaho Water Institute, in conjunction with faculty from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and Northern Arizona University, are hosting a free, virtual GeoHealth workshop in mid-June. The keynote speaker for the workshop is Dr. Gabriel Filippelli, the editor in chief for the international journal, GeoHealth, a publication of the American Geophysical Union. Other speakers include DWFI Director of Water, Climate and Health Jesse Bell and DWFI Faculty Fellows Yusong Li, Chuyang Liu, Shannon Bartelt-Hunt.

The structure of the three-day workshop will include three keynote speakers per day followed by a breakout session where comments from the speakers and the audience will be captured. The workshop will re-convene to share insights.

The first day of the three-day workshop will focus on aqueous chemical contaminants and public health, while the second day will drill down into one specific contaminant, arsenic. The third day will explore the relationship between public health and climate change.
